Carolyn Adams

Carolyn brings over 20 years of experience to Data+PR, blending a rich background in marketing research with a knack for storytelling. Her journey started with five years at a full-service research company in Chicago, where she honed her skills in questionnaire design, data analysis, and creating compelling narratives.

Carolyn has a track record of providing strategic PR guidance and securing major media exposure for both up-and-coming startups and well-established brands. She's a pro at leading teams, developing and executing data-driven strategies, and creating messages that resonate. Her extensive experience landing press for some of the least known B2B and B2C clients worldwide gives her a unique perspective, enabling her to connect with diverse audiences through the art of creative storytelling.

Before joining this collaboration, Carolyn served as a vice president at Highwire Public Relations and now leads BlueRun Public Relations, a senior-only virtual PR collective based in Chicago.

Karen Swim

Karen Swim, APR, is the Founder of Words For Hire, a B2B, Technology and Healthcare PR and Marketing agency and  the President of Solo PR Pro, a membership organization for independents and microagencies. In 2024, she also co-launched Data+PR, a collaborative with BlueRun PR that focuses on storytelling through data. 

A well rounded professional, Karen has more than two decades of experience in strategic public relations; marketing; business growth strategies; internal and external communications; social media and sales management. An award-winning sales and marketing professional with a depth of business expertise, clients value Karen’s broad-ranging knowledge, and commitment to helping them reach their goals. 

Committed to advancing the profession and elevating the standard, Karen is an active member of PRSA and has served on the PRSA Board of Ethics and Professional Standards, and Voices4Everyone, a PRSA committee that empowers communicators in fighting mis-and disinformation and leading the way for civil discourse.

Turning Valuable Yet Unreported Data into a PR Headliner

Salsify, an e-commerce unicorn, enlisted Data+PR to elevate the visibility of its annual branded consumer research trends report, which had been in place since 2020. Despite the report's valuable insights, Salsify struggled to gain widespread press coverage across its key media channels. Given the significant investment in the research, they wanted to ensure it received the attention it deserved.

Data+PR joined the team ahead of the 2023 report release, analyzing the data and crafting a hard-hitting narrative focused on e-commerce blind spots to capture the press’s attention. By developing multiple mini narratives within this overarching theme, Data+PR provided several compelling angles for the press, securing coverage in more than 15 e-commerce, retail, and marketing publications, dramatically expanding the report’s reach and impact. The success of this campaign cemented a long-term partnership with Salsify, which led to the successful promotion of the 2024 consumer trends report as well.

Survey Sparks Rapid Brand Visibility

Early stage company Namecoach had enjoyed success in the higher education market. The company had continued to innovate its technology product but needed to break through to a broader group of industries. To increase brand awareness the Data+PR team developed a 5-question data study to establish credibility and thought leadership with targeted audiences,

The data project was a huge success! The press release was distributed to 950+ media outlets, and the team secured 16+ articles about Namecoach including four targeted, top tier media opportunities. This survey data also established a foundation for a Series A fundraising visibility and a feature in Techcrunch. The data continues to be cited three years later.

How a Data Report Became a Market Mainstay

MBO Partners is a direct sourcing platform that enables enterprises and independents to work efficiently together. The company’s State of Independence (SOI) report is the longest longitudinal survey on the attitudes and behaviors of independent workers. Carolyn and Karen worked on developing this signature, branded study more than a decade ago. 

Today, SOI includes briefs that address topical themes and trends. Data+PR works closely with the company and research team to design the questions and create compelling narratives. The study is the go-to source of information and we continue to secure hundreds of stories and media mentions each year. In fact, SOI earns coverage consistently throughout the year with no gaps in between annual data releases.
